Case Study: Florida Juice

Increasing profits often requires increasing production capacity. Florida Juice wanted to renovate the fruit receiving area in its plant to significantly increase concentrate-making capacity. Existing operations had to be moved to make room for the new processing equipment and control center systems. Time was of the essence. Florida Juice had to meet the demands of an upcoming harvest and urgently needed the new receiving lines installed and running at peak efficiency. Adding to the challenge, there were no blueprints detailing the installation requirements or process rates for any electrical contractor to follow.
“The deadline was very tight for this large fruit-receiving project. We had no real drawings and Southern Power & Controls employees had to work with only verbal instructions. They were able to translate our objectives into reliable, working systems.”
Gene Scott, Plant Engineer, Florida Juice, Inc.
The actual start of the project was one month later than originally planned. A missed deadline would mean the first fruit of the season would be shipped to the competition, straining vital relationships with growers and losing substantial, unrecoverable revenue.
Southern Power & Controls helped Florida Juice quickly and carefully analyze the optimal use of space and systems to facilitate loading, cleaning and maintenance, all within the original footprint. This project required sophisticated diagnostic systems so that Florida Juice would be able to immediately pinpoint any processing problem and define the steps to bring the systems back on line.
Southern Power & Controls assigned a team of experienced industrial electricians to this project. Their knowledge of process flow and control systems made it possible to help Florida Juice develop solutions that met equipment capacity and surpassed production goals.
When complete, this project included:
Fully automated receiving system using an OMRON programmable Logic Controller
Nearly three miles of galvanized, rigid conduit
Square D motor control center with ALTIVAR variable speed drives to support a host of motors
150,000 feet of wire
2,000 amp service
Using its superior knowledge and skill, Southern Power & Controls was able to recover the original schedule. Without compromising quality or safety, this turnkey project was completed on time, just four months after Southern Power & Controls arrived on site.
“SPC craftsmen are exceptional — easy to work with, knowledgeable, and very flexible. For me, Southern Power & Controls is the only choice in industrial electrical contractors.”
